It's Not Over Yet, Colorado!
It's not over yet, Colorado. Governor Hickenlooper has just called a special session to debate civil unions -- after House leadership failed to hear the bill last night.
Governor Hickenlooper did the right thing today, after House leadership's unprecedented move threatened the future of our families.
The Governor's courageous stand for our families gives us all reason to celebrate. But it's not over yet. A special session doesn't guarantee passage of the bill.
Civil unions will now have to make its way through the Colorado Senate (yes, again) and back through the House -- where Speaker McNulty is in control. He decides which committees will hear the bill, and he chooses who serves on the committees.
Join us in asking the Speaker to do the right thing when civil unions comes back to the House in special session. Sign our petition now!- Keep the Pressure On!
It's been an incredible two weeks. First, civil unions passed the Senate with bipartisan support. Then, with the support of Republican Representative BJ Nikkel, it made it past the House Judiciary Committee, the group of lawmakers who killed the bill last year. And on Friday, the week ended with this critical legislation winning support from the House Finance Committee and Republican Representative Don Beezley.
In just a matter of days, we'll know the final fate of civil unions as we work to get it through the House Appropriations Committee in enough time to be voted on by all of our Representatives on the floor -- before the end of the legislative session on Wednesday. While we have overwhelming support for the legislation, it won't be easy to keep the bill moving forward quickly. And if the session ends on Wednesday without receiving a vote in the House, it's killed.
Help us keep the pressure on so that bill moves forward without delay. Send an e-mail now to your Representative!- We Won ONE Vote! Now, Let's Get a Few More.
The Colorado Civil Union Act has passed a huge hurdle! One courageous Republican, Representative B.J. Nikkel of Loveland, voted with all five Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee to move SB-2 forward with bipartisan support.
Against all odds, our stories, our families, and our community won over Representative B.J. Nikkel. And her vote has shown us all that support for civil unions is consistent with conservative values, that believing in equality is not red or blue.
Use this page to send a "thank you" e-mail to Representative Nikkel now!
With this win, we have much to celebrate. But our work isn't done yet. Civil unions will now move to the Senate Finance and Senate Appropriations Committees before it makes it to the floor.
Get in touch with your Representative and ask for a YES vote now!
Submit your information below, and you will be able to send a message to Rep. Nikkel and to your own House Representative.
